Abstract

1359514 Injection blow moulding polyesters CIBA-GEIGY AG 23 July 1971 [7 Aug 1970 (2)] 34738/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] An amorphous but transparent hollow article is injection blow moulded from a polyester produced from an acid component of at least 80 mol. per cent terephthallic acid and a diol component of at least 80 mol. per cent of ethylene glycol, which has an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0À70 ml./g. (preferably at least 0À85 ml./g.), a glass transition temperature of at least 60‹ C. and a crystallizing temperature of at least 150‹ C. (preferably at least 160‹ C.) using an injection mould and mandrel at from 10‹ C. below to 50‹ C. above the glass transition temperature of the polyester and a blow mould at 20‹ C. below said glass transition temperature. The injection mould and mandrel may be water cooled and the same mandrel may be used in the blow moulding. The neck of the hollow article may be formed in the injection moulding stage. Constituents and conditions for the production of polyethylene terephthalates and suitable copolymers by transesterification followed by condensation polymerization are given.
