Abstract

1359384 Spring-applied brakes; automatic regulation of brakes A F KENT 17 Sept 1973 [15 June 1972] 28093/72 Headings F2E and F2F A vehicle includes a braking system in which the brakes are applied by springs and released by mechanical or hydraulic means or compressed air or vacuum acting in opposition to the springs, release being initiated by manual control or through linkage either to motive power on the vehicle or to a haulage system to which the vehicle is connected or to a trigger-operated toggle, the vehicle carrying an inertia weight mounted on a lever or in guides and so connected to the brakes that in operation the inertia weight, in opposition to a further spring, opposes, or reduces the effect of, the brake springs when the "G" force exceeds a predetermined value. As shown in Fig. 1 brakes (not shown) are connected to brake rod 4 and are being applied by a spring 2 acting on a piston 3 in cylinder 1. Two alternative inertia devices are shown on the right. In the upper one an inertia weight 7 mounted in guides or, as shown, in a tube 8 is restrained by a spring 10 in a master cylinder 12 connected to a slave piston 13. When a predetermined "G" value is exceeded, weight 7 compresses spring 10 and delivers hydraulic fluid to piston 13 which rocks a lever 14 about a pivot 15 to engage a roller 16 on rod 4 and move the rod in brake-release direction. In the lower device an inertia weight 5 is mounted on a lever 6, pivoted at its upper end, the lever 6 being connected so as to effect compression of a spring 9 in a master cylinder 11, connected in turn to the slave piston 13. In Fig. 2 (not shown), a rigid vertical guide is engaged by spring-operated brake shoes mounted on a vertically-movable cage, so that when the haulage gear fails the spring applies the brakes; if, however, the resulting deceleration causes a predetermined "G" value to be exceeded, a pivoted lever, carrying a spring- restrained inertia weight, acts on the brake linkage partially to release the brakes. In Fig. 3 (not shown), an arrangement similar to that of Fig. 2, is associated with a rail vehicle mounted on parallel rails, the brake shoes operating on these rails. The brake-applying mechanism may be triggered off in emergency by any one of a series of hinged cranks located at the track side and moved into striking position by a lever from a single control point. In Fig. 4 (not shown) such a rail vehicle additionally has a trailing spring-loaded lever with a trackengaging shoe at its lower end, so that if the vehicle should tend to run backwards the lever is forced to pivot about an aperture in a guide on the vehicle and trigger off the brake-applying mechanism.
