1359369 Hydroxyalkyl- and carboxylic groupcontaining copolymers SUMITOMO NAUGATUCK & CO Ltd 24 Aug 1971 [24 Aug 1970 (2)] 39630/71 Heading C3P A copolymer has a molecular weight of from 500-30,000 and comprises 10-90 wt. per cent of one or more hydroxyalkyl group-containing monomer units, and 10-70 wt. per cent of units of a monomer or monomers containing a carboxyl group or anhydride or metal salt thereof. Up to 60 wt. per cent of units of another monomer containing no such groups may also be present. The polymers are prepared by polymerizing the monomers whilst controlling the molecular weight with a chain terminator such as a C 4 -C 18 alkyl mercaptan, a haloalkane, a hydrocarbon or an alkanol. Examples of the hydroxy monomer are a hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate, a mono- or dihydroxyallyl itaconate, maleate or fumarate, a dialkylene glycol itaconate or fumarate, a hydroxylalkyl alkyl itaconate or fumarate, an N-(mono- or di-hydroxyalkyl) acrylamide or methacrylamide, an N-(di-alkylene glycol)acrylamide or methacrylamide, a hydroxylalkyl vinyl ether, a hydroxyalkyl vinyl ketone or an acrylic acid monoglyceride. Examples of the acidic monomer are acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, itaconic, maleic and fumaric acids, the anhydrides and metal salts thereof, or a monoalkyl-itaconate, maleate or fumarate. In the examples, hydroxy-ethyl acrylate is copolymerized with (a) maleic anhydride, (2) mono-octyl maleate, and (3) acrylamide and itaconic acid, and (4) N-methylol acrylamide is copolymerized with maleic anhydride, all in solution. The molecular weight regulators used are octyl mercaptan, isopropanol and dodecyl mercaptan. The copolymers are treated with NaOH. The copolymers are used as emulsifiers for the emulsion polymerization of unsaturated monomers, and in Examples 5-8, the emulsifiers prepared in 1-4 are used in the preparation by emulsion polymerization of the following copolymers: butadiene/styrene/itaconic acid/ acrylic acid; acrylonitrile/styrene; butadiene/ styrene / methyl methacrylate / fumaric acid; and butadiene/acrylonitrile/acrylic acid.
