Abstract

1358540 Joint-making packing BRYCE BERGER Ltd 20 Sept 1971 [30 Sept 1970] 46477/70 Heading F2B Sealing means between a pair of members 11, 15 having opposed sealing surfaces 19, 18, one 15, of the members defining a cylindrical spigot received in a recess in the other member 11, the sealing surfaces being substantially normal to the spigot axis, comprises a sealing member 22 having a tapered annular truncated portion 24 located in a tapered space defined by tapering the recess in the member 11 at its junction with the sealing surface 19, the sealing member also having a flat integral portion 23 located between the sealing surfaces, the tapered portion 24 being arranged so that as the surfaces 18, 19 are drawn towards each other it is deformed to fill the tapered space prior to the flat portion 23 being clamped between the surfaces 18, 19. As shown the parts 11 and 15 are a pump barrel and a valve body respectively. The taper angle between the surfaces 25, 26 of the tapered portion 24 is the same as that between the surfaces 20, 21 of the tapered space but in the uncompressed state of the sealing member, as in Fig. 1, the surfaces 25 and 26 are inclined to the surfaces 20 and 21 respectively at a small angle. The sealing member 22 is of soft metal such as aluminium alloy.
