Abstract

1357735 Hydroformylation and hydrogenation reactions JOHNSON MATTHEY & CO Ltd 7 June 1971 [9 June 1970] 27824/70 Heading C2C Hydroformylation and hydrogenation are effected by reacting an olefinic compound in the form of a gas, hydrogen and carbon monoxide (for hydroformylation) in the presence of a hydridocarbonyl complex or rhodium including an arsenic- or antimony-containing donor ligand in the absence of an inert solvent but in the presence of an arsenic- or antimony-containing ligand in liquid form. An example prepares predominantly linear butyraldehyde by hydroformylation of propylene. Reference is also made to obtaining n-propanol in this reaction by turning off the carbon monoxide supply at a suitable stage.
