Abstract

1357319 Coated pigments LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 Dec 1971 [3 Oct 1970] 47130/70 Heading C1N [Also in Division C3] A pigment is coated with a polymer which is the condensation product of a cyclic ketone having 5-7 carbon atoms in the ring with methanol or formaldehyde. The exemplified pigment is TiO 2 ; others are listed. It may be pretreated with one or more hydrous oxides, phosphates or basic sulphate by conventional methods. The polymer may be added to an aqueous slurry of the pigment in solution in a solvent, e.g. butanol, acetone or benzene, or in liquid or solid form (in this case the slurry is heated so that the polymer melts). A lubricant, e.g. Mg or Al stearate, and a surface active agent may also be added. The pigment is finally filtered if necessary, dried, and ground or fluid energy milled.
