1357078 Gas coolers LAPCO WAREHOUSING & MFG Ltd 21 Nov 1972 53770/72 Heading F4S [Also in Division B1] Apparatus 2 for cooling and filtering hot compressed air used in the braking systems of heavy motor vehicles comprises a cooling section 4 bounded by inlet and outlet sections 5 and 6, the cooling section including a cylindrical aluminium casing 7 having a plurality of outwardly extending circumferential fins 8 and a filter unit 40. Hot compressed air entering through an inlet 12 flows upwardly into a cupshaped baffle 16 defined by a cylindrical wall 18, a top plate 20 and an apertured bottom closure member 22. Air, after entering and leaving the baffle interior via the apertures 24, then flows upwardly through an annular space 34 between the wall 18 and the casing 7 and thereafter through the filter unit 40 before finally leaving via an outlet 56. The filter unit 40, which comprises filter material 50, e.g. stainless steel wool located between upper and lower perforated plates 42, 46, is normally spring urged downwardly against a washer 38 by means of a coil spring 41. If however, during operation, the filter material becomes choked with dust and carbon particles the pressure of the air will force the filter 40 upwardly against the spring 41 thereby allowing air to pass to the outlet 56 via an annular space 48 surrounding the filter unit. A pneumatically operated valve 58 is provided to permit, by purging, removal of water, oil and carbon particles from the annular passage 34 through a drain opening 62. All materials used in the interior of the cooling section 4 are non- ferromagnetic to prevent the likelihood of clogging due to sticking of magnetized particles.
