Abstract

1356508 3,3<SP>1</SP>,5,5<SP>1</SP> - Tetrahalodiphenylsulphone-4,4<SP>1</SP>-diols and ethers thereof MARUBISHI YUKA KOGYO KK and MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 20 June 1972 [28 July 1971 15 Oct 1971] 28918/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Tetrahalodiphenyl sulphone derivatives of formula where A 1 and A 2 are hydrogen, C 1-4 alkyl or haloalkyl, or allyl or haloallyl; and X 1 , X 2 , X 3 and X 4 are chlorine or bromine; may be prepared by halogenating 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone and optionally etherifying the products. In examples (1) dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone is brominated to form 3,5,3<SP>1</SP>,5<SP>1</SP>-tetrabromo - 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone which is (4) etherified with allyl bromide and the bis-allyl ether, (6) brominated to the bisdibromopropyl ether, (17) brominated and chlorinated to the 4-dibromopropyl-41-dichloropropyl ether and (19) partially brominated; 3,5,3<SP>1</SP>,5<SP>1</SP> - tetrabromo - 4,41 - dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone is reacted with (21) ethylene dibromide followed by allyl bromide to give the 4-allyl-4<SP>1</SP>-bromethyl ether which is (23) brominated to the 4-dibromopropyl-4<SP>1</SP>-bromethyl ether; 3,5,3<SP>1</SP>,5<SP>1</SP> - tetrabromo - 4,41 - dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone is (25) reacted with butyl bromide followed by allyl bromide to form the 4-allyl-4<SP>1</SP>-butyl ether which is (27) brominated to the 4-dibromopropyl-4<SP>1</SP>-butyl ether; and (29) dihydroxydiphenylsulphone is chlorinated and then brominated to form tribromomonochloro - 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone which is (31) etherified with allyl bromide and brominated to the 4,4<SP>1</SP>-bis-dibromopropyl ether. The products are useful as fire retardant additives to thermoplastic polymers of ethylenically unsaturated monomers.
