1355785 Tobacco substitute GALLAHER Ltd 1 Sept 1971 [4 Sept 1970 11 May 1971] 42553/70 and 14215/71 Heading A2C [Also in Division C3] A synthetic smoking material consists of an oxidized cellulose derivative, in which some or all of the primary alcohol groups have been converted to uronic acid groups. Mineral salts may be incorporated in order to improve the taste and ash-formation and to lower the irritancy. Suitable salts are calcium or magnesium phosphates, citrates and oxalates. These salts may be between 5% and 30% by weight of the smoking product. Tobacco extract may also be incorporated, preferably after treatment with acid and washing with water if mineral salts have been used; this treatment lowers the salt content to between 5 and 10% by weight. If tobacco extract is used, 0.2% by weight of sorbic acid or butanediol-1, 3 may be added to reduce fungal growth.
