Abstract

1355120 Cathode-ray tube circuits LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GmbH 30 July 1971 [31 July 1970] 35875/71 Heading H4T The energy (velocity) of the beam of a cathoderay display tube is varied by switching different valves of electron accelerating high-voltage (EHT) to the cathode of the tube. The invention is described in connection with a display tube of the kind in which the colour reproduced on the screen is dependent on the energy of the scanning electron beam so that symbols traced by appropriate beam deflection may be reproduced in a required colour by control of the EHT. This requires switching times of a few microseconds which the comparatively small capacitance associated with the tube cathode circuit allows as opposed to switching an EHT supply in the tube anode circuit the capacitance of which would give rise to switching times of the order of millisecond. As shown, the anode A is supplied with a fixed positive D.C. voltage U (e.g. 14kV) and by means of linked switches S1, S2 an additional positive D.C. voltage V2 (e.g. 6kV) may be switched into the cathode-earth circuit. Alternatively the anode A may be connected to earth and the voltage source U1 connected in series with the cathode earth circuit. If three colours are to be reproduced a second switched voltage source U3 may be provided. The tube heater is supplied from a 6V winding on a transformer TR1 the primary of which is connected to a high frequency generator G providing a 30V, rectangular wave supply the 6V winding also providing the primary drive to a transformer TR2 having a secondary winding supplying - 100V at terminal 3 for the beam intensity control grid I via video amplifiers V and supplying + 600V at terminal 4 for the preliminary acceleration grid N. This voltage is also supplied to a focusing unit FU which provided the focusing electrode F with a focusing voltage the magnitude of which is adjusted in accordance with changes in the EHT supply by means of switches SC and S4 linked to switches S1 and S2 respectively.
