Abstract

1354876 Sulphonating/sulphating agents ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 12 May 1971 [15 May 1970] 23720/70 Heading C2C Organic compounds are sulphonated and/or sulphated by reaction with the amine/SO 3 reaction product obtainable by the reaction in a liquid solvent between equimolar amounts of a primary or secondary amine and sulphur trioxide under anhydrous conditions. The amine/SO 3 reaction products obtained from a primary or secondary amine and SO 3 under anhydrous conditions in a liquid solvent comprising liquid SO 2 or methylene dichloride are claimed as novel. The amine/SO 3 reaction products are thought to consist of a mixture of an amine/SO 3 complex and a sulphamate type material, each of different sulphonating/sulphating ability, and in proportions depending on reaction conditions. Specified amines are isopropylamine, tert. - butylamine, n - butylamine, iso - amylamine, diethylamine and diisopropylamine; other amines are also used in examples. Suitable compounds for sulphonation and/or sulphation are alkylphenols and their ethoxylates; unsaturated alcohols, secondary alcohols, long-chain primary alcohols, olefines, primary saturated alcohols, long-chain ketones, fatty acids and alkaryl compounds. After the reaction the mixture may be neutralized by addition of the corresponding amine, before or after removal of the solvent, or by addition of an alkali metal oxide or hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide. In examples the following are sulphonated and/or sulphated; nonylphenol ethoxylated with 4 moles of ethylene oxide, oleyl alcohol, C 12-14 primary alcohols, C 13-17 secondary alcohols, and C 15-18 α-olefines.
