Abstract

1354825 Metal foil - impregnated web laminates ISOLA WERKE AG 3 May 1972 [9 June 1971] 20661/72 Heading B5N Laminates are made by continuously impregnating a fibrous web with curable resin, continuously curing the web, repeatedly cutting to form sheets and compressing assemblies of the sheets and metal foils with adhesive disposed therebetween. The resin may be a solution of unsaturated polyester or of methyl methacrylate resin in a polymerizable monomer (e.g. a glycol diacrylate in the latter instance) or may be an epoxy resin, and may be hardened with benzoyl peroxide and/or amine. Up to 80% filler (aluminium hydroxide and steatite in examples, with others mentioned) may be present in the resin composition, which may be applied to the web as a thin layer while heating to maintain the viscosity. Preferably, impregnation is carried out at up to 60‹ C. and curing at up to 90‹ C. The web may be a mat, fleece, woven fabric or may be formed by embedding loose fibres in the resin. The web may comprise mineral, natural or synthetic fibres, preferably glass fibres or rovings. Before lamination, the impregnated sheets may be roughened and dried or tempered at 100-160‹ C.; a track-resistant adhesive foil or solution is then disposed between the metal and web faces to be laminated. Assemblies, comprising either metal-web-metal or metal-web-separating sheet-web-metal, may be bonded in a heated press. The metal foil may be of copper, nickel, nickel alloy, steel or high electric resistance alloy, e.g. "Manganin" (Registered Trade Mark).
