Abstract

1354804 Safety belt reel FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 3 Dec 1971 56186/71 Heading A3V A reel for a vehicle safety belt 14 comprises a spring loaded spindle 12 to one end of which is fixed a threaded cylindrical part 23 on which an inertia member 17 moves to lock with a clutch member 16 which engages frictionally by lining 18, 19 and 21 an end plate 20 and shoulder 22 of the housing so that, on a predetermined tension in the belt being exceeded, the spindle which is locked to the clutch member 16 by the inertia member 17 is allowed a restricted rotation under the frictional braking between parts 18, 19, 21 and 22 so that a wearer of the belt is not subjected to an abrupt restraint. A spring is provided to bias the member 17 away from the clutch member 16 but on sudden belt withdrawl the member 16 lags behind the rotation of the spindle and moves along the helical thread against spring force to lock with the clutch member. The predetermined tension in the belt at which the friction surfaces are designed to start slipping may lie between 450 and 1,000 pounds force and is adjusted by shims between surfaces 21 and 22 or by tightening the screw-threaded end plate 20.
