Abstract

1354471 Irradiating tetrafluoroethylene polymers IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 May 1971 [3 Feb 1970] 5037/70 Heading C3P A tetrafluoroethylene polymer is converted into a form that is capable of being communicated to a median number average particle size of less than 5 Ám as measured optically by subjecting an unsintered coagulated dispersion grade of a tetrafluoroethylene polymer selected from homopolymers of tetrafluoroethylene and copolymers of tetrafluoroethylene with up to 10% by weight, based on the weight of the copolymer of an ethylenically unsaturated comonomer, in powder form to γ-radiation until it has received a dose of at least 2 M Rads. In the Examples coagulated dispersion and milled granular PTFE powders are subjected to doses of 5 M Rads of γ-irradiation and comminuted in a light oil using bead milling or equivalent liquid dispersions techniques or in a fluid energy mill.
