Abstract

1354316 Mixing apparatus G FRIES A EYSSEN and G ROMEN [trading as J S FRIES SOHN] 19 April 1971 [8 Sept 1970] 20100/71 Headings B1C and B1F In a process for the continuous production of a granular reaction product, the major portion of a mixing vessel having a spaced apart inlet and outlet is filled with a charge of the product, reactants supplied to and mixed therewith, and product withdrawn, at a rate which maintains the quantity of product in the vessel substantially equal to the original charge. An apparatus comprises an eloganted container 1 divided into two chambers by a partition 2, each chamber having a rotatable mixing screw 3, 4 and the chambers having communicating passages screw 3, 4 (not depicted) at their ends. Each screw has a blade- or scoop-wheel 5 at its downstream end whereby material is circulated from one chamber to the other through the passages. Materials are supplied through an inlet 12 to an overflow vessel 13 of trapezoidal cross-section extending about half the length of the prior chamber and having a drip-plate 19 whereby the materials fall into the chamber in the form of a curtain. An adjustable closure slide 8 at the downstream end of the second chamber controls the ratio of material discharged by the wheel 5 to that recirculated, and in operation is adjusted so that the level is maintained at or above the top of the screws. The screws rotate at the same rate in opposite directions; the edges of the screws, scoops or blades may be sharp, or toothed as at 23 and their backs may have knife edges 24. There may be cooling or heating ducts 20.
