Abstract
1354314 Anodes and electrolytic cells for production of fluorine from molten baths MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 28 May 1971 [1 June 1970] 18060/71 Heading C7B A carbon anode for the production of fluorine from a KF: 1À8HF molten bath has an end portion clad by a gas-tight envelope of good electrically conducting material, e.g. of copper. Such anodes may be used in a cell from which each anode protrudes through a common cover such that the gas-tight envelope is external of the cell so that electrical connection to the anode can be established through the envelope. The cell shown comprises a tank 1 surrounded by a jacket 2 for use in heating or cooling the bath; carbon anodes 4 having sheathed ends 5 extending through steel cover 3; diaphragms 10 and cathodes 8 positioned coaxially with the anodes; means for withdrawing gases generated; stuffing boxes 7 of insulating material including gasket 15, e.g. of PTFE, for preventing escape of gases from the cell; and means 6 for supplying electric current to the anodes.
