Abstract
1354055 Ear protectors SIGMA SALES CORP 4 July 1972 31183/72 Heading A5R An ear-protecting device for location in the ear canal comprises a resilient diaphragm 36 retained between two spaced surfaces such that sound waves below a threshold pass through the device by a sinuous path via apertures 44a, 44b in said surfaces and through an aperture 38 in the diaphragm into the ear, percussive or repercussive sound waves above the threshold flexing the diaphragm to close off the sound path through the device by the sealing of a thickened part 40 of the diaphragm against one or the other of said surfaces. The diaphragm may have a sealing bead 40 around a central aperture 38 for sealing against spacedapart flat surfaces of two retainer plates 34a, 34b or against recesses therein. The plates and diaphragm may be enclosed in a housing 20 screwed onto an adaptor 52 attaching the device to a resilient fitting 12 for insertion in the external auditory meatus of the ear. In a second embodiment, Figs. 6-9 (not shown), the diaphragm and retainer plates are enclosed in a housing (70) incorporated in an ear fitting (12'), similar to fitting 12, and the diaphragm (36') has a thickened solid central portion (92) with opposed concave surfaces shaped to seal against annular parts of the retainer plates around axial through-holes therein, the diaphragm having apertures (98) therethrough located between the central portion (92) and the diaphragm periphery.
