Abstract

1353809 Sleeve couplings WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 25 Aug 1971 [25 Aug 1970] 39771/71 Heading H2E An electrical connector for insulated conductors comprises a shell 10 having walls 11, 12 extending from a base with the wall 11 extending further than the wall 12, and a metallic insert 40 disposable within the shell which has means for piercing the conductor insulation, such that when the shell is closed the insert closes around and connects with the conductors, there being resilient means for maintaining the shell in connection with the conductors. The shell 10 is J-shaped cross-section of annealed brass and has an insulating film 80 bonded thereto, the longer wall 12 being hardened into grooves 24, 25 which function as cutting edges. The insert 40 is also J-shaped and made of phosphor-bronze and has insulation-piercing tangs 46, 47 on its base 41 and wall 42 together with ribs 48-53 which grip the cable insulation, while nipples 62-67 prevent the conductors from escaping the tangs. The resilient means may comprise a spring 30 or an inwardly extending bow (33a, Fig. 18, not shown) formed in the base of the shell. In use conductors are laid within the insert and the connector is placed within a die which crimps the shell to the position of Fig. 11 with cutouts 68-73 on the walls 42, 43 of the insert being engaged by edge extensions 21-23 of the shell wall 11. During crimping the wall 11 is guided by the die so that the grooves 24, 25 drive the conductors against a cutting edge in the die to sever or trim the ends of the conductors to a required length. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 19, not shown) of the insert the tangs and ribs are replaced by bowshaped raised areas having interleaving transverse serrated edges, the resilience of the bowshapes providing an alternative to the spring 30.
