Abstract
1353755 Dental illuminating instruments VICON PRODUCTS CORP 26 April 1971 [6 May 1970] 11377/71 Heading A5R [Also in Division G2] Light from a lamp in box 12 is carried by optical fibre assembly 10 to to the end 22 of dental pick 18. The optical fibre assembly comprises a sheath of elastic material, e.g. rubber, PVC, polyethylene, which has been set, e.g. by heating, vulcanisation, curing, or irradiation, while in a helical shape, and a plurality of optical fibres, e.g. of glass, disposed within the sheath, the fibres being sufficiently flexible to permit the assembly to be extended and thereafter retracted by the forces in the elastic material tending to return it to its helical shape, without deleteriously affecting the optical characteristics of the optical fibres. The fibre bundle may be gathered at either end by a stainless steel ring attached, e.g. by epoxy resin to the fibres. These rings may be attached to the sheath, the fibres otherwise not being connected to the sheath. Silicone oil may be present on the fibres within the sheath.
