The cutting tools may be form tools which define the shape of the groove to be cut and are located on their respective slides at 180 degrees to each other on opposite sides of the workpiece axis. The cross slides are driven by a common screw spindle 9 having opposite hand threads of the same pitch. Steady rests 42, 43 with steady rollers 44 are provided to support the workpiece if necessary, during the machining operation.
