1353346 Gas lighters S T DUPONT 15 Sept 1971 [15 Sept 1970] 42933/71 Heading F4F A gas lighter comprises an outlet conduit 9 formed in a burner 4 which can pivot from a rest position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, to an operative position shown in broken lines in which latter position the burner outlet extends through an aperture 2 in the lighter casing, and a device for controlling gas flow through the conduit comprising a pivotable lever 14 which opens a shut-off valve 12. The burner 4, formed integrally with a screen 3 which closes the aperture 2 in the rest position, is pivoted by rotating a driving device 24 whose movement is transmitted by a link 23 and a roller 25 to the burner. At the same time a ball 20 mounted below the upstream end of the burner rides up an inclined surface 18 of a member 16 thereby pushing down the member to pivot lever 14 and open valve 12. To close the lighter the device 24 may be turned in the opposite direction whereupon a pin 22 mounted on the link 23 engages a housing of the burner to pull the latter shut or alternatively the screen 3 may be pushed in and a spring 30 raises the member 16 to shut the screen and close the valve 12. A knurled flint wheel (not shown) may be mounted on the end 28 of the driving device 24. The device 24 may be replaced by a push-rod or lever or alternatively a spring and ratchet driving system may be used.
