Abstract

1353077 Making hollow-ware; jointing AMERICAN CAN CO 5 Aug 1971 [22 Jan 1971] 36941/71 Headings B3A and B3V [Also in Division B5] Thermoplastics tape is wrapped about a side edge of a moving web by applying the tape to one face of the web so as to overlap the side edge, wrapping it around the edge to form a U-section and pressing the tape so that it adheres to the web. A web of fibre, plastics or metallic material or laminates thereof may be wrapped about one side edge with a tape of polyethylene or polyester resin which may be effectively bonded to the web to produce stock from which cemented lap-seamed can bodies may be formed. An adhesive or an adhesion promotor may be used. Apparatus for performing the method comprises rolls 22, 24 about which the web 10 passes in a Z-path to curl the tape 16 first transversely and then back into the plane of the web. A jet 28 of hot air or, Fig. 6 (not shown), a fence (32) may assist the wrapping operation. The wrapped web may feed on to body making equipment. The web may be preheated and the tape may come direct from an extrusion head.
