Abstract
1353067 Treating waste material OCCIDENTAL PETROLEUM CORP 28 June 1971 [8 July 1970] 30216/71 Heading C1K Valuable materials are recovered from waste by comminuting in mill 10 and bringing the product in contact with a hot gas stream, wherein the paper stock present is elutinated and passes into chamber 12 and thence to pulping tank 14 from whence it can be further purified and dewatered to give paper pulp. The solids not lifted by the gas stream are comminuted again at 24 and fed to a gravity separator 26 and elutinator clarifyer 28 which separate a organic fraction and a heavier metals-inorganic fraction. The former passes to another pulping tank 18 where pulp not already removed is taken off and cycloned and strained at 32. Organic material other than pulp is dewatered at 34 and pyrolysed in furnace 36 with coal at 800-1800‹ F. to yield a gas rich in hydrocarbons which is further treated, and a char which is devolatilized at 1200-2000‹ F. to produce a hydrogen rich gas stream. The metals-inorganic fraction after leaving 28 is screened and the ferous metals therein removed by a magnetic separator 40. The rest passes to a heavy medium slurry separator 42 where inorganics and light metals, e.g. Mg, Al collect at the top and heavier metals sink. The top material is crushed and screened at 44, 46 to separate sand, dirt, &c. from glass and from metal. The sink material is similarly processed to separate metals of differing density and treated further. Copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc are leached out with ammonia, the copper removed by electrolysis and the other metals precipitated out as carbonates with carbon dioxide. The metals-inorganic fraction can also be passed over a grease table to catch diamonds, and jigged to separate coins. Separated glass can be further separated into glasses containing ferrous ingredients and those with none by passing it though a high intensity magnetic separator.
