In the embodiment, the article of jewellery, e.g. a pendant, includes at least one semiconductor light emitting device powered from a battery through a switch, which is closed in a continuous, preselected or random fashion, e.g. by movement of the wearer, by incident sound or light, or by a pulse generator. The light emitting device, which may transmit light directly or through a real or artificial jewel, e.g. of paste, glass, or plastics material, can comprise a plurality of light emitting elements transmitting different colours, the article may be encapsulated in transparent or translucent material which may form the artificial jewel.
