Abstract

1352319 Making metal articles JOHNSON MATTNEY & CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [20 March 1970] 13599/70 Heading B3A [Also in Division C1] Articles for use in glass manufacture at operating temperatures of between 1100‹ C. and 1500‹ C. comprise a core and a sheet of a platinum group metal or an alloy based on such metal with a barrier layer between core and sheath of magnesia, the core being (1) either Mo or W with the partial pressure of oxygen in the interspace being below one micron, or (2) of a refractory metal or alloy of Nb, Ta, Cr, Zr, V, Hf, Rh and in which the oxides thereof are less volatile than the oxides of Mo at the operating temperature or (3) of Mo or W or an alloy of Mo and W with an atmosphere of an inert gas in the interspace. Argon is the preferred gas, but nitrogen or helium may be used. At least the major portion of the surface of the core may be coated with a getter material selected from Ti, Zr, Hf, Th, V, Ni or Ta or may be alloyed therewith, the getter material being different from the core material. The barrier layer may also contain a small quantity of vitreous material such as a borosilicate glass. Specifications 1,190,266, 1,195,349 and 1,222,434 are referred to.
