Abstract

1351110 Homopolar machines INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [5 Feb 1970] 5644/70 Heading H2A A homopolar machine has a field coil divided into two spaced parts and current transfer means for conveying current between the stator and rotor located between the coil parts in a region of low field intensity at the centre of the joint field of the two coil parts where the rotor is of disc form, Fig. 3 (not shown), with a brush engaging the periphery of the disc, the coil parts are located on either side of the disc and in one example of a drum type rotor, Fig. 4 (not shown), brushes engage the peripheries of flanges at opposite ends of the rotor and each flange has a pair of coil parts located one on each side. Fig. 5 shows a machine with a hollow drum rotor 11 and inner and outer stator parts 15, 14. Current is transferred to the rotor by axially spaced rings 17A, 17B which dip into liquid metal in channels 18A, 18B, and located adjacent the rings and channels are field coils consisting of inner parts 19, 21 mounted on stator part 15 and outer parts 20, 22 on the stator part 14.
