1351100 Acetic acid AJINOMOTO CO Inc 11 Aug 1972 [19 Aug 1971] 37666/72 Heading C2C Acetic acid is prepared by the isomerization of methyl formate at an elevated temperature in the presence of activated carbon with a halogen promoter. The carbon catalyst may be activated with steam and acid washed and free halogen, hydrogen halide, alkyl halide, alkylene dihalide, ammonium halide, and phosphonium, arsonium or stibonium halides may be the promoter. Inert gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methane, nitrogen or Group O gases may be present.
