Abstract

1350923 Uranium oxides COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 25 May 1971 [25 May 1970] 16945/71 Heading ClA Uranium oxides are prepared by spraying a mixture of a uranium nitrate solution and formic acid, into a first zone in a vessel maintained at 150-300‹ C., and calcining the product from the first zone in a second zone in the same vessel. The nitrate may be aqueous uranyl nitrate and may be mixed with 0À4 ml. formic acid/gm.U. The solution may be sprayed in with air or H 2 / N 2 mixture as an atomizing gas the gas being first brought to the temperature of the first zone. The calcining may be carried out at 800‹ C. in air to yield U 3 O 8 , or in hydrogen to yield UO 2 . The intermediate product has a specific area of 2À5-7 m.<SP>2</SP>/gm. and an apparent density of 0À9-1À8 g./cm.<SP>3</SP>. A U 3 O 8 product has a specific area of 2À7 m.<SP>2</SP>/gm., an average grain diameter of 1À2 Á and an apparent density of 1À5 g./cm.<SP>3</SP>. The UO 2 products have specific areas of 1À4- 4-5 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., average grain diameter of 0À5-1À6 Á and apparent density of 1À2-2À6 g./cm.<SP>3</SP>.
