Abstract
1350727 Burning halogenated organics SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 12 June 1972 27268/72 Heading C1A Aq. acid solns., e.g. HCl, are prepared by removing the acid gases, present in the gas stream produced on burning with O 2 halogenated organics, by cooling and absorption in water or an aq. halogen acid in two stages comprising: (a) passing the gas stream through an elongated tube, the inner walls of which are provided with a flowing continuous film of the aq. liquid to remove part of the acid gases and then (b) scrubbing the cooled gases to remove the remaining acid constituents. The hot gas stream containing HCl produced on combusting a mixture of chlorinated organics, fuel, air and steam in furnace 2 may be directly passed, at a flow rate of 40-80 m./s., through the vertical tube 6 supplied with an absorbing inner film of water at 10-100‹ C. or an aq. HCl soln. via lines-7 and 10, the latter soln. having been produced during HCl absorption. The HCl soln. may also be sprayed from jets 12 on to the tube in order to cool the gases therein to 80-140‹ C. The gas stream issuing from the absorption zone is then scrubbed with water or recycle aq. HCl soln. in towers 14 and 20 to remove the remaining HCl. The tube 6 preferably consists of a refractory material in the upper part and alloy steel, ceramic, glass and/or plastic in the lower part.
