Abstract

1350719 Making electrical contacts; welding by pressure; shearing H A SCHLATTER AG 30 Oot 1972 [4 Dec 1971] 50021/72 Headings B3A B3R and B3W A method of connecting electrical contacts 8<SP>1</SP> to contact carriers 14 comprises cutting a contact piece 8 from a length of wire or ribbon-like contact material 3, advancing the contact material to push the cut piece to a position for connection to the carrier, connecting the piece to the carrier and withdrawing the contact material by a distance 24 which is smaller by the length 22 of the cut piece 8 than the distance 23 by which the piece 8 is advanced. At the beginning of a work cycle, a clamp 9 holds the end of the wire 3 on a lower shear blade 7 and an upper blade 6 cuts off the piece 8 pivoting a guide section 2 against the action of a spring 20, thereby clamping the end of the wire 3 against an extremity 19 of a guide section arm. Grips 4, 5 are withdrawn through the distance 22 thereby tensioning and straightening the clamped wire as they slide along it. The blade 6 is raised allowing the guide section to pivot back and the clamp 9 is released. The grips 4, 5 move the wire 3 through the distance 23 and the cut piece 8 is pushed on to the contact carrier 14, to which it is welded by electrodes 12, 13. During welding, the grips are withdrawn through the distance 24 to align the end of the wire 3 with the clamp 9, which is then lowered to complete the cycle. In alternative embodiments, as the guide member 2 is pivoted by the blade 6 it may lift the grip 4 or release its loading spring 25 either partly or wholly.
