Abstract

1350301 Treating air A GENTIL 12 Oct 1971 47531/71 Heading ASG [Also in Division B1] Liquid to be evaporated from absorbent pads 6 flows from closed container 1 into vessel 5 through pipe 4 which has a bevel-cut end 7 to determine the level of liquid in the vessel. The apparatus shown may be used for disinfecting a room with formaldehyde; and in this case the container 1 is charged with 40% formalin by means of scalable filling socket 2. The evaporation of formalin from pads 6 is enhanced by blowing air heated to about 100‹C against the pads by means of blower 8 and electric resistance heater 9. After a given period of time, e.g. 6 hours, programme controller 10 closes magnetic valve 3 and switches off blower 8 and heater 9. The odour of formaldehyde in the room is then neutralized by evaporating ammonia solution from absorbent pads 21 by means of blower 18 and heater 19, pads 21 being supplied with ammonia solution from container 14 which also has a delivery pipe with a bevel-cut end. The neutralization time is terminated by programme controller 22. By changing the number of absorbent pads, it is possible to regulate the rate of evaporation. Turboblower 26 and heater 27 may be used for preheating the room to about 30‹C. The apparatus may be incorporated into the shafts and ducts of forced ventilation systems (Fig. 2, not shown). Also described is a mobile unit 50, Fig. 3, associated with an aspirating fan 61 and a bed of activated carbon 63 for adsorption of formalin.
