Abstract

1350248 Thermal analysis apparatus STAHLWERKE PEINE-SALZGITTER AG 7 July 1971 [7 July 1970] 31917/71 Heading G1N Apparatus for determining oxygen and carbon concentration in molten steel comprises a pair of sampling vessels 15, each having inlet openings 16, 17 covered by a thin metal foil 35, and being attached to a tubular lance 5 by brackets 13, 14, each vessel having a thermocouple 9 with a junction 10 housed in a quartz V-tube 11 secured to a refractory tube 12 attached to the lance, the junction spaced from the side walls and bottom of the vessel and thermocouple leads 7, 8 extending through the bore of the lance to a measuring or indicating instrument 19. One of the sampling vessels containing de-oxidizing agent e.g. aluminium and the other vessel being free of any de-oxidizing agent. A gas bubble deflector 18 is mounted on the lance. In use the vessels are immersed in a melt, the metal foils 35 melting upon immersion so that the vessels are filled with molten metal and are then lifted from the melt and allowed to cool. During cooling the temperatures of the two vessels are measured and the difference in the freezing points of the two samples represents the oxygen concentration in the melt, Fig. 7 (not shown) e.g. a difference of 5À2‹C. represents 0À073 per cent. To determine carbon concentration, the measured freezing point of the sample in which the oxygen is combined with the de-oxidizing agent (the 'killed' sample) is first compensated for the effect of elements known to be present and in known concentrations. The compensated freezing point is then representative of carbon concentration e.g. 1532‹C for steel represents 0À041 per cent carbon. Alternative embodiments of the sampling vessel are described in Figs. 3 to 6 (not shown).
