Abstract

1350073 Electric switches BRITISH LEYLAND TRUCK & BUS DIVISION Ltd 24 May 1971 [11 July 1970] 33764/70 Heading H1N [Also in Division F2] A motor-vehicle ball-mounted gear shift lever 1 is laterally movable along a track 8 of a generally spherical base for selective positioning and subsequent right-angled movement to engage a spring-loaded ball 6 on the lever end with any one of two rows of electrical contacts 11-18 to complete an electrical circuit (not shown) for electrically selecting various gear ratios. As shown, the contacts 11a 11b of each pair 11-18 are arcuate and separated by gaps 19, whilst in Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown) the metal ball 6 acts as one contact, each pair of arcuate contacts 11-18 (Figs. 1 to 3) being replaced by single circular contacts (28) to (35) respectively, the shift lever fulcrum ball 2 being made in two portions, one (2a) of which is integral with the knob and made of plastics whilst the lower portion (2b) is metal which is electrically connected to the ball 6 and a metal terminal plate (37) carried by an insulated top (38) such that an electrical circuit can be made through the plate (37). Cam ramps 23a to 27a are provided in the path of the lever ball 6 adjacent the outermost terminals 11, 15 and 14, 18 each end, for resisting engagement with a spring-loaded sleeve 20 on the shift lever for readily manually sensing the position of the shift lever relative these outermost terminals. In Figs. 7 to 9 (not shown) a slidable plate (39) is formed with tongues (45, 46) which when the shift lever 1 is moved to a set of contacts for selection of one ratio the plate (39) is moved by the lever 1, via the tongue (45), to engage the tongue 46 with a slot in the fulcrum ball 2 to inhibit movement of the shift lever 1 along the track 8 whereby the shift lever may only be next moved for selection of the gear ratio whose electrical contact lies opposite the concontact already selected, i.e. on the opposite side of the track, a peg (48) carried by the ball 2 contacting the tongue (46) during this latter movement and urging it and thus the plate leftward into a second position in which it is held by ball detents (41) thus releasing the shift lever 1 for movement along the track 8 for selection of other ratios.
