Abstract
1349739 Spoiler BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 1 July 1971 [1 May 1970] 21091/70 Heading B7G [Also in Division F1] An aircraft has a spoiler comprising a first member 11 pivotally mounted on fixed structure 12 and carrying one or more slidably displaceable further members 14, 15, and actuation means for moving the spoiler between a retracted position, in which it lies within or flush with the fixed structure 12, and an extended position, by moving the first member 11 relative to the fixed structure and the further members relative to the first member. The first member is mounted by means of a shaft 13 and is moved by means of a worm gear 21, driven by a fluid motor through flexible drives 23 and gear-box 22, which engages a worm-wheel 20 on the shaft 13. The member 14 is connected by rod 24 and crank 26 to a sleeve rotatable on the shaft 13 and carrying a worm-wheel 28 driven by a worm gear 27 from the gear-box 22. The member 15 is likewise slidably mounted on the member 14, and is connected to a sleeve 31, driven by a worm drive 32, 33 from the gear-box 22, on the shaft 13. Each member is channel-shaped, with flanges extending downstream of the gaseous flow. The spoiler may be located on the wing or fuselage of the aircraft to act as an air brake, or a plurality of such spoilers may be mounted around the internal wall of a jet propulsion nozzle 35 to cause mixing of secondary air with the jet efflux and thereby provide noise attenuation. The spoilers may be operated in unison in dependence on the configuration of variable nozzles 34 and 35.
