Abstract

1349547 Propellants IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 Aug 1972 [16 Sept 1971] 43188/71 Heading C1D A granular nitrocellulose propellent composition includes high nitrogen content nitrocellulose and at least 10% by weight of low nitrogen content nitrocellulose having an average nitrogen content of between 11À0 and 12À0% by weight. Constituents of the compositions in addition to low nitrogen content nitrocellulose may be gun cotton of 13À2 to 13À4% nitrogen, nitroglycerine, nitroguanidine, diphenylamine, and ethyl centralite. Potassium nitrate may be added and subsequently leached out to form a porous product. The composition may be mixed with ethyl alcohol and diethyl ether to form a dough which is extruded and cut to form grains which are glazed with graphite powder. A caseless propellent charge for a nail-driving gun may be made by compacting grains of the propellent composition into cylindrical form with a surface indent for a primer.
