1349226 Welding by pressure; electromagnetic forming I K KIKOIN A I NASTJUKHA O G BESPALOV A S KNYAZYATOV P A SMIRNOV A N UDOVENKO and M M FISHKIS 3 Nov 1972 50752/72 Headings B3R and B3Q A unit for forming and/or welding a metal workpiece by a pulse magnetic field comprises a capacitive energy-storing device 2 intended to be connected to a source of electric energy 1, an inductor 3 connected to the device 2 and adapted to accommodate a metal workpiece, means 4 for discharging the device 2 through the inductor the circuit being such that the discharge voltage decays with periodic oscillations, and a switching device 5 connected across the inductor and arranged to short circuit the inductor when the discharge voltage thereon is reversed. Thus instead of a periodically oscillating current (shown dotted in Fig. 3) there exists a quasidirect current which decays exponentially and the harmful force and temperature effects on the inductor are reduced. As shown, the switching means 4, 5 are both semi-conductor rectifiers but may alternatively be gas discharge devices (Fig. 2, not shown).
