Abstract

1348775 Coated metal IMPERIAL CHEMICAL IDUSTRIES Ltd 30 June 1971 [15 July 1970] 34313/70 Heading B2E Non-stick coated metal surfaces are produced by coating a Sherardized iron or steel surface with a coating composition comprising a dispersion in a volatile liquid of a tetrafluoroethylene polymer and a vinylidene chloride copolymer, the ratio of the weights of the tetrafluoroethylene polymer and the vinylidene chloride copolymer being 9:1 to 1:19 and the vinylidene chloride copolymer itself containing 95-70% by weight of vinylidene chloride and 5-30% by weight of a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and thereafter drying the coating. By the term "Sherardized iron or steel surface" is meant an iron or steel surface that has been coated with powdered zinc and heated until the surface layer of the iron or steel has alloyed with the zinc. Preferably there is used an aqueous mixture dispersion of polytetrafiuoroethylene and a vinylidene chloride copolymer containing 70-95% vinylidene chloride, 0.5-5% of a monomer containing at least one free carboxylic acid group, especially acrylonitrile, and 0-29.5% of at least one other monomer, especially acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid. The coating may be sintered. Applications of the coated articles metioned are chute and hopper liners, snow shovels and confectionery moulds.
