Abstract
1348723 Smoothing magnetic layers EASTMAN KODAK CO 2 Sept 1971 [3 Sept 1970] 41059/71 Heading D1L A layer comprising magnetisable particles in a binder on a carrier is smoothed by effecting relative movement between the carrier and a vibrating ultrasonic horn and causing the horn to contact the surface of the layer under pressure. The method is described with particular reference to tapes and films having one or more magnetic stripes containing for example iron oxide, chromium oxide or Fe, Co, Ni or an alloy thereof. The ultrasonic horn may be used in a stationary or mobile manner on the film which may be treated in the atmosphere or submerged in a cleansing liquid. As shown in Fig. 10 dope from hopper 49 is cast on film 11, dried in zone 51 and thereafter subjected to vibrations from ultrasonic horn 21.
