Abstract

1348707 Tracks and grounds CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 9 July 1971 [10 July 1970 29 March 1971] 32449/71 Heading A6D [Also in Division C3] Resilient surfaces, particularly for use in recreational applications, e.g. running tracks, golf tees and greens, playground surfaces and horse-racing tracks, are formed from compositions comprising ingredients (1) to (4) and optionally additional ingredients (5) to (7) as follows:- (1) 1 part by weight of a polyurethane prepared in situ from a polyisocyanate and a polyol consisting of at least 50 wt. % of a diol of M.W. 1,000-5,000, the polyisocyanate being used in an equivalent ratio of from 0.8-1.60 isocyanate groups per equivalent of hydroxyl groups; (2) 0.6-4.5 parts of an extender oil having an aniline point of 75-130‹F, a viscosity from 200-6,000 SUS at 100‹F, and a defined volatility; (3) 0.25-23 parts of resilient aggregate having a maximum dimension up to 1.0 inch and which passes through a No. 3 U.S. standard sieve; (4) 0.08-0.45 parts of carbon black; (5) up to 1.8 parts of a mineral filler having a size in the range from 20 mesh (U.S. sieve) to dust; (6) up to 0.5 part of a drying agent (which in the final composition may be in its hydrated form); and (7) up to 0.5 part of a polyurethane curing catalyst. For non-porous surfaces the amount of resilient aggregate (3) is 0.25-4.5 parts, and the higher amounts give porous surfaces. In Examples, the compositions are formed from (1) the reaction product of bis(isocyanatophenoyl) methane with a mixture of N,N-bis(2- hydroxypropyl) aniline and either polybutadiene-diol or a mixture of two different hydroxy-terminated polybutadienes; (2) a single, or mixture of two, extender oils; (3) rubber buffings; (4) carbon black; (5) calcined clay; (6) calcium oxide; and (7) dibutyl tin laurate. In Example 9 such a mixture is screeded to form a long-jump runway, and the screed then sprinkled with further granules of rubber buffings. After curing overnight two coats of green acrylic apint are applied to the surface.
