Abstract

1348646 Removing static electricity during extrusion MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd 24 Nov 1971 [22 Dec 1970] 60750/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] The electrostatic tendency of polymeric materials to attract dust is reduced by heating the material in an electric field to a temperature below its decomposition temperature, the electric field being insufficient to produce ohmic contact between the material and an electrode used to apply the field, as a result of ionization of air, or any other insulation breakdown but being sufficient to cause migration of charges within the material. The field may be D.C. or very low frequency A.C. In one embodiment, thermoplastic polymers are treated whilst they are being extrusion moulded into sheet form, the electrodes being built into the die of the extruder. Such an extrusion die is shown in Fig. 4 in cross-section. The extruder itself is not shown. The die comprises a two-part die head 42, 43, the two parts forming a manifold 43 which is supplied with an adjustable spreader bar 44. The die also comprises lips 45 and 46. Lip 46 is adjustable by means of bolts 53 according to the thickness of sheet required. Lip 45 is insulated from the rest of the die assembly by insulating pads 47 and 48, and forms one of the electrodes. The other electrode is tip 46 which is earthed via the extruder to which it is bolted. The polymer is thus subjected to the D.C. electric field as it exudes from the die. The lip 45 is coated with, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene on its surface which contacts the thermoplastic material. A simpler embodiment, not illustrated, is disclosed, where neither of the lips is insulated, but both are earthed via the extruder, and a separate electrode is placed near the die (on two electrodes one above, and one below it) at the desired potential difference. In the examples: (2) and (5) polystyrene or ABS resin is extruded into sheet using the die of Fig. 4; (3) acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene resin is extruded into sheet using a standard sheet extrusion die both lips of which are earthed, and which has a pair of electrodes placed near the lips, and on either side of the sheet being extruded; and (4), as in (3) but using brass rods of semicircular X-section, and having their edges rounded to reduce the chance of corona discharge. The electrodes are heated by coils. Heating of polymers by high frequency electric fields is excluded.
