Abstract
1347673 Drum brake shoes and linings GIRLING Ltd 20 April 1971 [21 April 1970] 18933/70 Addition to 1341019 Heading F2E A lining component 14, Fig. 4, comprises a layer of friction material 28 secured to a backing plate 30, and has means, e.g. plain-and-countersunk holes 32, Fig. 3, whereby the lining component may be removably attached to a brake shoe; the backing plate 30 is intended to be capable of acting as the shoe platform, and preferably is made sufficiently thick and rigid for this purpose. The lining component may therefore be used with a relatively narrow shoe, as shown; and a single width of shoe may be employed to accommodate more than one width of lining component. A shoe 12, Fig. 1, comprises a supporting plate 16 and integrally-formed webs 18 which together comprise a channel-shaped shoe, the shoe having axially-extending portions, (as shown, integral punched-out lugs), 20 flush with the supporting plate, each such portion being adapted (e.g. by a tapped hole 22) to radially retain a lining component by means of a screw 34; the shoe further has means (e.g. dowel-receiving holes 24) for circumferentially retaining the lining component. The supporting plate 16 also has at least one tapped hole 26 for each lining component. Dowels 36, shown in Fig. 4, as attached to the backing plate 30, may instead be attached to the supporting plate 16 for engagement in holes in the backing plate. Similarly, the tapped holes and screws may be interchanged. Fig. 2 shows two lining components attached to one shoe: these components may be made asymmetrical for one-way fitting, or symmetrical, so as to be interchangeable.
