Abstract

GERDTS K G 26 Jan 1973 [2 Feb 1972] 4032/73 Heading G1N In a liquid-level gauge the electrode 6 is mounted on an insulator making a fluid-tight seal with a bore in the container wall 1. The insulator comprises several mica discs 8 surrounding the electrode with interposed distance sleeves 9 insulated from the electrode e.g. by an annular gap 10. The parts are compressed by a nut 14 against a shoulder 11 on the electrode, and two of the discs form a seal against the partition 3. The distance pieces 9 may be metal. This construction is especially suitable for alkaline liquids which attack ceramic and porcelain insulators. INTERNAL LEAKAGE may be detected by a further electrode (not shown) in the annular gap 10 or by using one distance piece as a detector electrode, or by packing the gap with dry salt which provides a low resistance when moist and so provides an abrupt change in the signal. SURFACE LEAKAGE on the insulator may be compensated by using one of the distance pieces as a compensating electrode, with a common tubular counter electrode surrounding the distance piece and the "level" electrode. The series resistors thus formed are connected in a bridge circuit so that the leakage signal opposes the "level" signal.
