Abstract
1347272 Knitting machines M PHILIP 19 April 1971 [17 April 1970] 26892/71 Heading D1C A metal needle bed has, at the front edge of the needle bed, a hard surface or surfaces substantially even with the bottoms of the needle tricks at least in the areas aligned with the tricks and formed by material 26 harder than that of the bed which is deposited in particulate, liquid or vapour form so that it is substantially integral with the metal of the needle bed. Tricks are cut in bed 10 and metal is removed from areas 22 of the milled forward edge by cutting or milling to receive material 26 which is then ground down. Grooves are then cut in the edge aligned with the trick walls and between areas 22 to receive teeth of steel harder than the bed. The material may be applied in a high velocity inert gas jet at 30,000‹F and may be chromia, alumina, titania, zirconia or tungsten or chrome carbide, refractories, ceramics or pure metals. In a rib machine, the hardened material may be applied along the whole length of the bed.
