Abstract

1347221 Monitoring cigarettes photoelectrically BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 17 April 1972 [3 Sept 1971] 17611/72 Heading G1A [Also in Division A2] The ends of cigarettes 18 Fig.1 being moved normally to their length by a conveyor 12 are monitored in respect of tobacco packing by applying light to the end surface by means of a fibre optic probe and measuring the reflected light by means of a detector suitably disposed to receive the reflected light or by a detector at the end of a second branch of a split fibre optic. The output may be arranged to actuate a rejector apparatus via a wheatstone bridge after a desired delay and the probe which may be of cigarette diameter may be at the discharge end of a making machine, at a filter tip attachment machine or at the entrance of a packaging machine. A pair of probes may monitor the two ends.
