Abstract

1346907 Coating DR BECK & CO AG 30 July 1971 [3 Aug 1970] 35951/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Electrical conductors are coated with a heatresistant resin curable through free hydroxyl groups by applying to the conductor at at least 100‹C a molten resin, the resin having been produced at a condensation temperature which is the same or higher than of the melt which is applied to the conductor and which has been condensed to an extent such that no substantial further condensation takes place in the melt, and which has a cross-linking equivalent weight of between 400 and 1,600, the melt optionally containing up to 15% by weight solvent on the total weight of the resin and solvent. Useful resins for the coating operation are polyester imides which have been form from terephthalic acid on an ester thereof, a diimide dicarboxylic acid obtained from trimellitic anhydride and an aromatic diamine and a dihydric and a trihydric alcohol. The molar ratio of terephthalic acid or the ester usually polyester imide resins is preferably within the range 1:1 to 5:1. Preferably the resins have an equivalent ratio of hydroxyl groups to ester group-forming carboxyl groups in the starting reaction mixture in the range 1.15:1 to 1.65:1. Small amounts of solvents in amount not greater than 40% by weight and preferably not greater than 15% by weight may be present. Suitable solvents are cresols, xylenols, N-alkyl pyrrolidones, dialkyl sulphoxides, dialkylacylamides and high melting point aromatic agents such as solvent naphtha may also be present. The conductor may be a thin copper wire and more than one coating may be applied if so desired.
