1346691 1,3,5(10)-Estratriene synthesis INSTITUT KHIMII PRIRODNYKH SOEDINENY AKADEMII NAUK SSSR 10 March 1971 6499/71 Headings C2U and C2C The invention comprises the preparation of compounds of formula (wherein R is oxo or (H, #-OH); R 1 is CH 3 , C 2 H 5 or C 3 H 7 ; R 2 is H, CH 3 or COCH 3 ; and n is 1 or 2; with the proviso that when R 1 is CH 3 then R is (H, #-OH)) from #<SP>8(9)</SP>-compounds of formula (wherein R is oxo, (H, #-OH) or (H, #- OCOCH 3 ); R 1 , R 2 and n are as defined above, and the proviso does not apply) by reduction with a mixture of trifluoroacetic acid and tr - ethylsilane in an inert organic solvent. When the starting material contains a 17- or 17a-hydroxy or acetoxy group, or when R 1 is CH 3 , a 17- or 17a-oxo group, said group is concurrently converted to a trifluoroacetoxy group, and this must subsequently be converted to hydroxy, for instance by alkaline hydrolysis or NaBH 4 reduction.
