1346047 Heat treating alloys FULMER RESEARCH INSTITUTE Ltd 6 Nov 1970 [12 Nov 1969 14 Nov 1969] 55482/69 and 53734/70 Divided out of 1346046 Heading C7A Heat recoverable articles are made by cooling an alloy containing an intermetallic compound which on such cooling, or on such cooling followed by deformation, transforms into bonded martensite, and by then plastically deforming the cooled alloy, the transformation being such that on reheating the martensite reverts to its higher temperature form with at least partial restoration of the alloy to its original shape. The process is applicable to a wide range of alloys in the systems Cu-Zn, Cu-Al, Cu-Al-Zn, Cu-Zn-Sn, Cu-Zn-Si, Cu-Al-Mn, Cu-Al-Fe, Cu-Al-Ni, Ag-Al, Ag-Cd, Ag-Mg, Ag-Pt, Ag-Zn, Au-Al, Au-In, Au-Mg, Au-Mn, Au-Zn, Au-Cu, Co-Pt, Fe-Pt. The alloy may also include a primary solid solution which undergoes a similarly reversable transformation to bonded martensite as disclosed in Specification 1346046. The treated alloys may be used for pipe couplings, springs, or for temperature sensitive components of switches.
