Abstract
1345944 Coated filaments EI DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 2 Dec 1971 [3 Dec 1970] 56019/71 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] A composite filament comprises a core of at least one continuous elastomeric yarn and a continuous sheath of a closed-cell polymeric foam modified in that walls of the cells contain microapertures, the core being under tension and the sheath being under compression along the fiber-axis of the composite filament when in unstressed condition. The composite filament is produced by feeding the elastomeric yarn through a zone in which it is held elongated under tension, applying a continuous coating of a foamable organic polymer composition thereto, flash-extruding the coated core so as to convert the foamable composition into a micro-apertured ultra-microcellular foam coating, and releasing the tension on the composite filament to allow the elastomeric core to retract partially and the sheath to be compressed longitudinally of the filament axis until a balance of forces is established, whereby the core is partially elongated and tensioned within its coating of micro-apertured ultramicrocellular foam. The microapertured ultramicrocellular foam is produced by a suitable adjustment of reaction conditions (polymer concentration, temperature). The synthetic polymer is preferably a polypropylene and the elastomeric yarn may be a spandex yarn. At least 50% of the cells in the foamed coating should preferably be interconnected by microapertures. The average microaperture area per cell is preferably at least and/or up to 50 microns. Preferably two or more cell walls per cell contain the microapertures, and generally the cells have an irregular polyhedral shape. The examples refer to coating polyurethane spandex yarn and a natural rubber core with a foamable composition comprising a linear propylene, methylene chloride and silica aerogel.
