Abstract

1345859 Independent suspensions VOLKSWAGENWERK AG 3 Nov 1972 [27 Nov 1971] 50717/72 Heading B7D An independens suspension for a non-steered wheel of a vehicle comprises a longitudinal or oblique suspension arm 1 carrying an axle support 10 which is pivotable against the restoring force of a combined compression and tension spring 9 about hinge means 8 at the end of the arm remote from its pivot axis 6. The arm 1 in a leading link in the case of a front wheel and a trailing link in the case of a rear wheel so that the axle support 10 pivots on the arm 1 under cornering loads on the wheel to produce on understeering effect which counteracts an oversteering effect resulting from deflection of the arm 1. The pivot axis of the hinge means 8 may lie in the central plane of the wheel or be inclined to meet the roadway on the line of intersection of the roadway with the central plane of the wheel. Stops limit movement of the axle support 10 on the arm 1 and may be arranged to prevent outward movement of the support from the straight ahead position. In another embodiment the suspension arm comprises inner and outer side members which are pivotally connected at their ends remote from the pivot axis of the arm, and the axle support is rigidly attached to the outer side member which is displaceable along the pivot axis against restoring springs.
