Abstract

1345835 Axial flow fans and compressors; gas turbine plant SOC NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION 1 June 1972 [3 June 1971] 25671/72 Headings F1C F1G and FIT [Also in Division F2] A fan or compressor intake comprises a series of blades whose flanks are constituted by elastic walls deformable under the action of an inflatable body so as to create between adjacent blades a sonic throat acting to attenuate noise propagating upstream. The blades may constitute fixed inlet guides (7) to the compressor or fan (1) of a gas turbine aircraft engine Figs.1, 9 (not shown). Each blade 8 may comprise, Fig.6, an elastic membrane 13 which is maintained in contact with metal leading and trailing edge portions 9, 10a by bars 11, 12 respectively which support a nose cone (3) at their inner ends. When silencing is required a valve (17) is opened to supply compressed air to inflate internal bladder 14, thus causing the flanks of membrane 13 to deform to the dotted profile 18a, 19a defining a sonic throat between adjacent blades 8. Each trailing edge portion 10a may include a passage 23 supplying a stream of air 25 through slot 24 to reduce wake noise. In a modification, Fig.7, leading and trailing edge portions 9b, 10b are connected by a rigid web 26 and membrane 13 is replaced by two membranes 28, 29 each provided with two beads 30 retained in grooves 27 by bars 31, 32. Three pairs 33, 34, 35 of bladders are provided each of which can be independently supplied with compressed air to permit differential inflation. In a further modification, Fig.8 (not shown) only one pair of bladders is provided but the membranes (28a, 29a) have a thickness which varies from the leading to the trailing edge. A relief valve (37) controls bladder inflation pressure. The blades 8 may or may not have a diffusing function The intake may include boundary layer suction devices.
